This poster titled ‘Mother Tongue’ is intended as a metaphor for the key methods in which language is transmitted, received and developed.
The central concept of the poster is the female/ tongue / mother. This figure symbolises the fundamental importance of each individual’s birth language, which nurtures our identity and cultural security.
The variation of ‘language transmission’ marks within the poster; represent linguistic diversity and multilingualism. The poster shows languages being received, understood and combined. It is my intention that this visual reference indicates that the acceptance and integration of our differences is essential to the development of global sustainability and harmony.
Our languages are conveyed through speech, sight, sound and thought, affecting all aspects of human life, they are the cornerstones of our societies, cultures, education and economies.
