The Colors of Language

by Nikol Antoniono

Inspiration for my poster came from the flag image on the UNESCO home page. To me, the flags truly represent all of the countries from which the thousands of languages come from. The colors contained in the flags really caught my eye and I knew that was the direction I wanted to go in.

I felt that the use of color would be an easy way to visually express the idea that languages matter. I also wanted to create something with my hands instead of having it all be computer generated. So I used my daughter’s construction paper and tore it into pieces. After scanning them in I added some filters to the final image. The bright colors also give the design a celebratory feel.

The challenging part of the project was how to integrate the text into the layout without taking the focus away from the colors which are so important. The choice to use Helvetica as the font was an easy one. It’s a universal font that is clean, simple, and easy to read.

I believe this design does a good job of graphically showing the importance of the many different languages in the world.
