PROCLAMATION

Even as we seemingly become more and more similar as an effect of globalization, language is still a strong identifier and something that can make us unique.

In this poster design, our cultural diversity is reflected in a small sampling of the world’s languages. The words chosen reflect the importance and benefits of language as well as the common threads that unite all cultures. These words (translated into English) include: communication, expression, history, identity, jokes, literature, preservation, recipes, songs, traditions, et cetera.

A variety of words is employed rather than the same word in several languages. The intent is for each person viewing the poster to have a unique experience, since most people cannot read all of the text. Hopefully, this will inspire conversation amongst viewers, i.e. “Hey, Ryan reads Arabic, maybe he can tell us what this says!” In this way, the graphic provides an example of how language really does matter; people must use multilingualism or linguistic communication in order to fully understand the poster.

The proclamation coming from the “universal human” silhouette, an explosion of words, creates dynamism on the page. Presented in variations of the United Nations’ signature blue, the poster reinforces the brand identity of the organization. Space is provided in the lower left corner for logos and perhaps a paragraph explaining the goals of International Mother Language Day.

“Proclamation” clearly communicates that linguistic diversity must be not only preserved, but celebrated.
