LANGUAGES MATTER! A UNESCO poster competition

This poster is a photograph of a printed page with holes cut into it.

The vowels from the slogan “Languages matter! / Les langues, ça compte!” have been cut away, making the text challenging to read.

Many of us take reading and understanding our mother tongue for granted. I want to make the viewer experience a process of translation.

I chose to cut the letters out of the page, rather than just leave blanks, so that the page would become an object with areas physically missing – quietly reflecting the (violent) fact that half the languages living today will soon be gone forever.
