LANGUAGES MATTER! A UNESCO poster competition

Competition Details

by James Woods Marshall

This is a very graphic and forceful design, but there's an urgency to the message that makes it mandatory. Structurally, the silk-screened look underlines the immediacy fo the message, further emphasized by the bold, painted titling. Color-wise, and as mundane as it sounds, the palette for the central image attempts to replicate a simple range of human skin tones.

As illustrated in one the secondary images, the message areas (the writing in the cheeks) communicate the simple tautology: "language is communication is identity is connection is truth." Also as illustrated in the other secondary image, there is ample room for placement of any logos or designations deemed necessary.

Thank you for the opportunity to participate in a project about a subject I feel so passionately about. As Mr Matsuhara said, ".... languages are at the heart of all social, economic and cultural life...."
