Competition Details

Survival Kit of Parts

by anviere

The competition states all entries should be functional and beautiful to reveal the quality of the material. Deciding upon a functional object to design is infinite. How do you select one over the other – is a stool bookshelf more important than a designer chair? Modern society blurs the line between what is explicitly functional as a necessary requirement to survive and what is a luxury objects disguised as an essential requirement in life.

Survival Kit of Parts takes the given plywood material and transforms it into several objects that are useful tools to survive should you find yourself in the wild with nothing. It encourages a lifestyle considering the natural environment around you. The large and tactile feel of the tools are primitive and appropriate to a natural environment to strengthen the notion that these are purely for the function of surviving – to eat, drink, sleep, keep warm, excrete, cleanse.

The Survival Kit of Parts provide tools for the following:
- Hunting/fishing with the spear and machete blade.
- The spitroast pegs help in cooking the food, one shovel is provided to dig a hole in soil to create an oven.
- A cutlery set, plate and a shallow bowl allows you to eat and drink comfortably
- You can erect a basic tent structure to hang material to create a shelter from the weather.
- The sieve is useful when prepping food or use as a showerhead to wash. The second shovel is used to dig cesspits and dispose of waste hygienically.
- An assembly kit provides a low seat to not sit on uncomfortable ground. This can be cushioned with the slim material strips. Additionally, the slim strips can be used as bedding/cover for comfort when sleeping.
- During times of inactivity, a jigsaw puzzle can provide mental stimulation.
- The frame that holds all the items together can be split off and used as firewood so no material is unutilised.

It is a very sustainable and economical manufacturing process, which lends itself well for mass production to be distributed in events of natural disasters or strife.
