Activism without the fanaticism

The world’s forests are being depleted at an alarming rate. No one doubts that. But what many people fail to grasp is that protecting them doesn’t require tactics that are, shall we say, “frowned upon” by the authorities and the majority of upstanding citizens. More often, these illegal approaches to protecting our forests end up amusing the public rather than causing them to take action.

We’ve all considered chaining ourselves to a giant redwood or a 200-year-old oak at some point in our lives. And who doesn’t love a good tree-sit. It gets some local press, a B-list celebrity joins in, but it usually ends in multiple arrests, a court date and a ruling in favor the logging company based on an antiquated technicality.

The point is, you don’t have to sabotage a fleet of backhoes or stand in the way of a moving logging truck to make a difference. Instead, you can simply buy FSC certified products. In this lazy consumer society of ours, it’s something anyone can do and many people will actively embrace. And, best of all, protecting our forests won’t mean needing a good lawyer.

The ads we’ve created for this competition represent just the seeds of a campaign that could grow for years and years. We feel the concept of “activism without the fanaticism” will have broad appeal within the environmental community and will motivate the public to not only learn more about the Forest Stewardship Council, but drive them to seek out FSC certified products when they shop.
