The overall aims and objectives of what the United Nations Millennium Development Goals are to improve the lives of the world’s poorest through the various goals here shown in pictures.

The goal 1 picture depicts eradicating extreme poverty and hunger by self-sufficiency in food production for which the corn, the bread slice and the rice grains represent. The campaign targets the major hunger areas of Africa (corn), Asia (rice) and the rest of the world (bread slice).

The goal 2 picture shows primary school children with the pencil symbolizing education and the graduation cap symbolizing its attainment.

The goal 3 picture shows the balance of male and female using the symbols for the planets of Mars and Venus, characteristics of the male and female gender. This is against a background of woman empowerment through the ballot box.

The goal 4 picture shows male and female children growing up to mature adulthood with a crawling child superimposed to depict progression from babyhood to childhood. The syringe symbolizes immunization. The campaign aims to target governments in developing countries to immunize children against preventable diseases such as measles, polio and smallpox.

The goal 5 picture shows a waving baby in her mother’s womb, a sign of good health for both mother and child.

The goal 6 picture shows the red ribbon depicting the fight against HIV/AIDS on the background of a mosquito, the cause and recognized symbol for malaria. The campaign aims to combat primarily these two diseases as they contribute to the most fatalities in tropical developing countries. Note that the ribbon has the effect of ‘cancelling’ the influence of the mosquito.

The goal 7 picture shows a satellite picture of the earth; a droplet of clean water, depicting the objective of supplying clean water; the sunflower and wheat depicting environmental sustainability through sufficiency in food production. The sunflower can also be used as a fuel. The blue layer or halo symbolizes the ozone layer; hence the campaign aims to bring awareness against activities that deplete the ozone layer.

The goal 8 picture shows a handshake on the background of the earth, depicting global partnership. The campaign aims to highlight partnership for development between developing and developed countries in the core areas of finance (fair trade and debt relief), drugs (pharmaceuticals) and technology.
