The design is intended to remind and convey to the participants of the Kobe G8 Environment Ministers Meeting and the rest of the world that the purpose of our effort to reduce, reuse, and recycle (“the 3Rs”) is so that the natural resources of this planet could be supplied for generations after generations.
The design is derived from the universal sign of infinity- “lemniscate ∞”. A pair of water drop shapes, symbolizing our precious resources, composes the lemniscate in this design. The leminiscate caputures the essence of the infinite process of the 3Rs. Moreover, the shape perfectly combines the representation of the “8” of the conference name and of the year with an abstracted outline of the Kobe Port Tower, one of the most iconological landmark of Kobe.
After understanding several typical ways of using a furoshiki, a series of ∞s is placed across the diagonal of the design. This composition then becomes a ribbon like band wrapping across the gift or bag and stylishly contrasts with the simple red background.
