Sentinel: Motion Sensor Alarm System

Bicycle theft is a major deterrent to many potential cyclists worldwide. With the Sentinel motion sensor alarm system, cyclists need never worry again. This security system, appropriate for various designs of bicycles, will be on guard at all times.

Using a locking action inspired by secure padlocks, the Sentinel is attached in an unobtrusive position around the seat post of the bicycle; well out of the way of the cyclist’s range of motion. Rubber padding on the mating face of the unit ensures that this system is secure and adaptable to variations in the dimensions of seat posts.

The aerodynamic form ensures minimal wind resistance against the unit. All openings are located on the upperside of the unit. This prevents internal systems from being contaminated by spray from the rear tire.

Injection molded from shock resistant polycarbonate plastic and ultrasonic welded together, the casing of the Sentinel can withstand great forces and is near impossible to break. The internal stainless steel locking mechanism ensures that the unit cannot be forced from the structure of the bicycle, nor seize up due to corrosion.

The alarm system’s internal batteries are charged using a magnetic pendulum which passes through a coil. Thus, this efficient unit capitalizes on the natural motion generated while cycling. No replacement of batteries is required.

Alarm activation takes place through the use of an electronic tag which makes use of wireless technology. The cyclist wears this unique tag on his/her person. When the cyclist moves beyond a five metre radius from the bicycle, the alarm system arms itself and a red LED on the Sentinel begins to flash intermittently to indicate that the alarm system is armed. The unit automatically disarms itself again when the cyclist returns within a five metre radius of the bicycle.

The Sentinel uses the same pendulum system used for charging in order to detect when the unit is moved. If it moves while armed, the alarm will be tripped and a shrill siren will sound, the red LED burning constantly until the unit is disarmed through close proximity to the unique wireless tag. This can also alert people of a bicycle hijacking, where the cyclist is pushed from the bicycle and the hijacker moves beyond the wireless range.

By easing the concerns of countless bicycle owners, the Sentinel will again encourage many to use cycling as a solution to commuting, competition and leisure.
