Global Warming Informational Postcards

This past quarter at school, in two of my classes, I was introduced to the seriousness of global warming. One class, Environmental Science, taught me the science behind global warming. I was inspired to share the data with other people to try and change society’s harmful behaviors. In my other class, Digital Layout and Design, I was challenged to create an informational series to teach the general public about global warming. These postcards are a combination of both classes. The information is what I found to impact me the most from my science class. The postcards themselves were a part of the series I created in my design class.
I took the approach of sarcastic humor with these two postcards. I wanted compelling images that juxtaposed two elements that would capture people’s attention. The postcards are intended to be mailed in succession to one another so there are two slogans that are repeated. The first, “This may increase your awareness”, pulls off of the sarcastic humor used in the images. The other, “Change is coming”, is to send a positive message to the audience.
The “Sun Lit Beaches of Hawaii” postcard informs the reader about the dire consequences of rising sea levels. This is a serious aspect of global warming and deserves attention. I used the table to show just how much sea level has risen, and why there is great need for a change in behavior.
The “Lush Amazon Rainforest” postcard is a little more complex in the information department, but explains necessary scientific data. One major cause of global warming is carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. This postcard informs the reader that Earth has its own process for keeping the carbon budget in balance, but because of human influence this budget is out of whack.
