‘Wearing’ a Burden
A design to raise awareness of air pollution and its consequences:
This piece of clothing main function is to examine the human intervention into nature’s environment. The scarf design is simple; it express through imagery and function the burden humanity have to ‘wear’ as a consequence of its negligence towards nature. The destructive images pulled before ones face create a feel of unsettlty and disturbance; it is both educational (showing nature destruction) and the results: the scarf as a filtering device becoming a product of necessity. The design serves as an awakening call and a ‘punishment’ if you wish (the punishment being the irony behind the concept – after all we have done; now we have to suffer – one ‘wearing’ the dirt on his face – an accessory of necessity and reminder of his sins)
Literal images might be used for the scarf (for example NASA satellite photography of earth) but for the purpose of the brief I decided to design my own images ‘accusing’ and ‘sentencing’ the wearer because of his negligence towards nature.
Design details:
The scarf design holds to the face simply by a knot on the back – this way the whole design is made from single material piece of fabric (no Velcro, no elastic bands)
From the inside on the back of the nose area an aluminum wire fits the nose tight

The design can use (MicroAirScreen) fabric which can filter pollen size 30 micron and is washable
