Table for Four

Co-authors:

This design makes a set consisting of a table and 4 chairs from a single sheet of 4' x 8' x 1” plywood. The table is a 36" diameter circle with a height of 30" and the chairs have an 18" seat height (standard sizes).

The pieces are held together without hardware through a balancing of the opposing forces of tension and compression. The design does not depend on gravity to maintain stability; if the top of the table were lifted in the air the legs would not be left on the ground. The pieces fit together tightly, but can still be disassembled and reassembled without damage.

The images are photographs of a 1/5 scale mock-up made with laser cut acrylic. When the set is made from wood, there will be a strong contrast between the exposed plies of the curved surfaces and the plain wood of the face surfaces. This contrast will draw attention to the beauty of the wood (unfortunately I was unable to make a scale model in wood, but hopefully the acrylic model conveys the essential idea).
