GOING WITH THE GRAIN: design an object using sustainable wood

Competition Details

plywood pouf

by Amanda Sullivan

Conceived as a multi-functional object, the plywood pouf serves as an ottoman, side table, stool or sculpture. The construction is entirely flat-pack, with a framework comprised of four internal rings that hold the ribs together. The ribs have been designed in two widths to create a dense surface area as they converge. One pouf can be CNC routed out of a 4’ x 8’ sheet of FSC-certified plywood. The suggested schemes illustrate the ability of the object to take on a number of forms by manipulating the profile of the rib. The directionality of the ribs, expressing the plywood core, along with their composition, create depth and texture.
